The X-Files: the history of the anthrax epidemic in the USSR
In 1946, a research center within the USSR was created under the code name Sverdlovsk-19, which was included in the group of enterprises of the Biopreparation association hidden from the public. Here, since 1973, the development and production of rather dangerous strains of diseases biological weapons, which was banned by the international convention in force in the USSR in 1972. It was here that the anthrax epidemic was observed in 1979, the details of which are hidden under the cover of secrecy until now.
Authorities have put forward a version according to which an outbreak of anthrax occurred due to infected livestock meat, and a total of 27 official cases of infection were reported. Academician Burgasov made a similar presentation during a delegation to the United States.
The cause of the disease of livestock was explained by the poor quality of feed, therefore all citizens of Sverdlovsk and the region were urged to temporarily refrain from buying meat at markets and in unchecked places.
However, the truth is far from voiced, and according to one of the versions, laboratory assistant Nikolai Chernyshev, who forgot to change the nozzle filter, became the culprit of this state of emergency. It was he who protected the environment from hazardous emissions from the laboratory, and without it the disease spores flew around the city. The authorities were well aware of this danger, so immediately after the incident, all the officers of the special camp were transferred to the barracks. Three days later, they were given the necessary vaccines and transferred to dispensaries, when several people among the civilians diagnosed with pneumonia died.
It is assumed that the leaders of the military laboratory wanted to hide their involvement in this incident by any means, and admitted their guilt only when they were charged. However, it was unprofitable for the authorities to reveal the truth to the population and the world community as a whole; therefore, a wave of misinformation was passed through the press and some scientists.
There are other opinions on the epidemic of anthrax in the expanses of Sverdlovsk, based on laboratory studies of this stick. The fact is that the outbreak, as a rule, is not characteristic of the release of a single source, and scientists proved that there were several foci, but they were located along the river. This prompted the idea that the disease was spread artificially, therefore, sabotage was not excluded. This view also fed the duration of the epidemic, which exceeded the incubation period of the disease, because of which it was assumed that the emissions of spores were carried out with a certain time difference.
It is also surprising that in the United States in the early days of an outbreak of anthrax, they already heard about the tragedy and even allowed the version of the development of biological weapons by Soviet troops. On the territory of the USSR, a similar statement was made 5 days later than in America, and only after some pathologists recognized the signs of anthrax among the victims.
As a result, the authorities admitted that about 300 people died as a result of the mentioned epidemic, and only after almost a year the local scientific journal published a note on individual cases of the disease.
