The skill to find the coordinates of a point is needed not only for solving math problems, but also useful in life. After all, this is the ability to navigate around the map, build drawings, work in some graphic editors, and even play naval combat. The article provides information on how to find the coordinates of points.

## Mathematical Axis

The coordinate of a point is the quantity that determines its position. The point can be located on a plane or in three-dimensional space. Any plane has two sizes. In mathematics, this is the abscissa and ordinate axis, in geography - latitude and longitude. Using the example of the mathematical axis, we will analyze how to find the coordinates of points. In order to find the coordinates of a point on a plane, do the following:

- Draw two axes that intersect at right angles. The point of their intersection is the origin, that is, zero. The horizontal axis corresponds to the abscissa axis, it is the X axis, and the vertical axis corresponds to the Y axis or Y.
- First we find the value of the abscissa. For this, we lower the perpendicular to the horizontal axis. That is your meaning. Coordinate can havea kind of a positive number, if the point lies to the right of the ordinate axis and a negative one - if it is located to the left. It happens that the point lies on the Y axis. It turns out that the axis itself is our perpendicular. That is, the value of the abscissa is zero.
- We proceed to the determination of the value of the ordinate. To do this, draw a perpendicular to the Y axis. If the point is located above the X axis, this value will be positive and below it will be negative. If the point lies on the X axis, then the ordinate of the point is zero.
- The coordinates of the point are written in the form of X, Y values in brackets. For example, if the abscissa is 3, the ordinate is 4.5, then the point has coordinates (3; -4,5).

If you face a task, how to find the coordinates of a point in space, it is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. All that distinguishes the definition of values is the introduction of an additional axis. That is, your point will have not 2, but 3 coordinates. Usually in mathematics, the third axis is called Z. If you need to find the coordinates of a point, lower it on the X, Y, and Z axis along a perpendicular. This will be the desired values.

## Coordinates of points on the map

The coordinates of points on a map or globe are very similar. Only in this case they are denoted by degrees. Our planet is conventionally divided by horizontal lines - parallels and vertical - by meridians. The values of the parallel are called latitude, and the meridians are called longitude.

### Latitude

The equator is taken as a reference point for the latitudes - a line that divides the planet in half, it has00latitude. Latitudes located above the equator are called northern, and below - southern. In order to set the value of the latitude, look at the value of the parallel on which the point is located.

### Longitude

The starting point of longitude is zero meridian. All longitudes located to the right are called east, to the left west. The coordinate value is determined by the number of the meridian on which the point is located.

The value of geographical objects is recorded indicating latitude (north or south) and longitude (east or west). For example, the coordinates of Moscow will look like this: 550north latitude and 370east longitude.
