Failure of the GPS sensor prevented the first test of Exos Aerospace

On August 25, a suborbital rocket SARGE (Suborbital Autonomous Rocket with GuidancE), built by the aerospace startup Exos Aerospace, was launched from the territory of America's spaceport in the state of New Mexico. At the end of the test, representatives of the company called it “extremely successful”, but practically did not reveal any specific technical details.

Three weeks later, Exos Aerospace published a test report. According to the document, the flight was not quite as planned. Shortly after launch, the rocket-mounted GPS sensor stopped reporting data. This led to the automatic shutdown of the engine at the 38th second. The SARGE flight program provided for their shutdown at the 62nd to 65th seconds. As a result, the rocket was able to reach a maximum height of only 28 km, instead of the planned 80 km.
The cause of the failure of the GPS sensor is still unknown. The ensuing check revealed no obvious damage to the device, wiring, or SARGE antennas. Also, according to the company's report, immediately after takeoff, the rocket briefly deviated from the course due to the fact that the launching frame was not fixed to the ground.As a result, a torque appeared on the SARGE, however, the rocket’s automation managed to quickly compensate for it.

In general, in Exos Aerospace declare that they are satisfied with the test results. According to the company, after making the necessary modifications to the design, the rocket will be able to reach the mark of 100 km. It is reported that during the next launch a test load provided by NASA will be on board.
